Seville, Andalusia is also the cultural capital of the south. The local male inhabitants of the city are known as Sevillanos and women, Sevillanas. HistoryThe history of Andalusia predates 1100BC, and the region was governed by many groups through the years: Tartessians, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals and Visigoths. Arabs and Moors dominated for nearly 500 years in the middle ages until 1248 when it became Castilian. Then in 1492 was conquered by Ferdinand and Isabella. The port from which Columbus sailed to the New World / Americas was located in the region of Andalusia and thus the spanish dialect spoken in many of the Americas comes from this region of Spain. Today you can still see the influence of the Moors on the architecture of Andalusia. GeographyAndalusia is comprised of 8 provinces:
Seville, Cordoba and Jaen are land locked on the northern side of Andalusia and the others on the southern boundary adjoining the Mediterranean Sea, Strait of Gibraltar and Atlantic Ocean. |
